A Weekly Update from Wayward Haven Farm
With this week’s update, we’re settling back into our weekly rhythm. As always, we welcome your comments, questions, or suggestions. You can find previous updates here, and you can follow the weekly reflections on living well over at From the Hermit’s Porch.
It has been a wet stretch here at the farm — the kind of rain that turns the fields into a muddy, boot‑sucking mess. But after the unusually dry March, April, and most of May, we’re grateful for every drop. The world is green and lush as summer approaches, and we’ll take what we can get. Farming teaches you early: the future is unknowable, and flexibility is the only real strategy.
In the Garden & the Kitchen
We updated the What We’re Growing and Crafting page today so you’ll know what we have available if you visit us at the Nicholasville Farmers Market this Saturday, 9AM – 1PM.
This week’s work includes:
- processing cabbage into sauerkraut
- pickling cauliflower
- canning a few jars of cucumber pickles
Out in the garden, the tomatoes need more stringing, and the tomatillos and peppers are ready for their cages. With all the mud, the XtraTufs came out of the closet — the only way to move around without losing a shoe. Once the soil dries, we’ll be back to weeding, tilling, and the next round of hoeing.
Re‑Anchoring Our Purpose
We’ve been reevaluating our schedule for the rest of the year — not because we’re unsure about the work, but because we needed to re‑anchor why we open our gates at all here at the farm.
We love growing. We love offering what we grow and craft to our friends and neighbors. But it’s easy to slip into the mindset of “produce stand,” and that’s not who we are.
We both lived the corporate life. It paid the bills, but it cost too much — attention, health, joy, coherence. The work here at the farm is not easier, and it certainly doesn’t pay more, but it is truer to who we are. Over the last decade, we’ve learned that climbing ladders was never the life we needed. So we expanded the vision of the farm into a place where we could learn to live well with the seasons — and help others do the same.
If that’s something that resonates with you, our philosophy and the conditions for living well is a good place to explore and learn right along side us.
A New Thank‑You for Our Email Subscribers
Starting this week, we’re offering a 10% discount for our weekly email subscribers. If you stop by our Wayward Haven Farm booth at the Nicholasville Farmers Market, just let us know you’re on the list and we’ll apply the discount on the spot.
Our Updated 2026 Rhythm
We’ve updated our 2026 schedule to align with our re-anchoring.
We’ll still be open eight times per year, right around the season changes and their midpoints. We want these openings to feel like small seasonal gatherings — moments to join us for an onsite activity, to walk the grounds, or to see what’s emerging from the garden and the kitchen.
We’re always happy to welcome visitors outside those times. Just call or send a note to arrange a visit.
Our next opening runs:
Thursday, June 18 – Sunday, June 21
Daily from 2 PM to 6 PM
You can check the full schedule and RSVP for any of the early summer opening weekend’s events.
